What abdominoplasty involves
A tummy tuck removes selected lower abdominal skin and fat. Depending on examination and goals, surgery may reposition the navel and address separation of the abdominal muscles. It is not a treatment for general weight loss, and future pregnancy or substantial weight change may alter the result.
Full, mini and combined procedures
A “mini” tummy tuck treats a more limited area and is not simply a smaller version suitable for everyone. Liposuction may be combined in selected cases. The surgeon should draw the expected scar, explain whether muscle repair is proposed and discuss the effect of existing scars or hernias.
Preparing for recovery
Early movement may be restricted and you may need help with children, work and household tasks. Drains or compression garments may be used. Follow instructions on wound care, mobility, lifting and thrombosis prevention. Scars change over many months.
Risks
Potential complications include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, delayed healing, skin loss, prominent scars, altered sensation, asymmetry and blood clots. Smoking and some health conditions can materially increase risk.
- Which operation is proposed and exactly where will the scar sit?
- Is muscle repair needed, and why?
- How does the surgeon reduce blood-clot and wound risks?
- What help will I need at home and for how long?
- Who provides urgent and routine follow-up?
