What are lip fillers?

Lip filler usually means an injectable gel containing hyaluronic acid. It may be used to alter volume, border definition, proportion or asymmetry. Product choice, placement and amount should follow an individual assessment rather than a standard “look”.

Common early effectsSwelling, tenderness and bruising

What can realistically change?

Filler can influence contour and volume, but it cannot guarantee perfect symmetry or reproduce another person’s features. Swelling can temporarily exaggerate the result, so the final appearance should not be judged immediately.

Ask how the suggested amount relates to your anatomy, whether staged treatment would be safer, and what happens if you dislike the result. Some hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved, but dissolving is itself a clinical procedure with risks.

Risks and warning signs

Common effects include pain, swelling, bruising, lumpiness and asymmetry. Infection, cold-sore reactivation and delayed inflammatory reactions can occur. Rare vascular occlusion can damage skin and, in very rare circumstances, affect vision. This requires urgent recognition and treatment.

Before treatment: confirm the injector has an emergency plan, appropriate medicines and a clear route for urgent aftercare. Seek immediate clinical advice for severe or increasing pain, unusual skin colour changes or visual symptoms after filler.

Questions for a Manchester lip filler consultation

  • What qualification, insurance and complication training does the injector have?
  • What exact product will be used, and can I see the sealed packaging?
  • Why is the proposed amount suitable for my lips?
  • Who provides out-of-hours help if I am worried?
  • What are the alternatives, including doing nothing?
