FUE and FUT
Follicular unit extraction removes small grafts individually; follicular unit transplantation removes a strip from which grafts are prepared. Both move hair rather than create new follicles. They differ in scarring, shaving, donor management and recovery, and neither method is automatically best for everyone.
Diagnosis before design
Not every form of hair loss is suitable for transplantation. Assessment should consider pattern, stability, scalp health, donor density, medicines, family history and age. A conservative hairline may age more naturally and preserve donor supply for possible future loss.
Recovery and growth
Redness, crusting, swelling and temporary numbness may occur. Transplanted hairs commonly shed before later growth begins. Density develops gradually and outcomes vary. Existing non-transplanted hair can continue to thin.
Risks and questions
Risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, poor growth, unnatural direction, overharvesting, temporary shedding and persistent numbness. Ask which named clinician diagnoses, designs, makes incisions and oversees graft handling.
