Breast surgery guide

Breast augmentation in Manchester.

Implant choice is a long-term healthcare decision, not simply a cup-size decision. Understand alternatives, future follow-up and revision risk.

Implants and fat transfer

Breast augmentation may use implants or, for selected patients, transferred body fat. They differ in achievable change, scars, predictability and potential future procedures. An uplift may be discussed where skin or breast position is a central concern; an implant alone does not correct every form of droop.

Size, shape and placement

Implant width, projection, shape, surface and placement should be discussed in relation to chest dimensions, existing tissue and lifestyle. Bra cup sizes are inconsistent and cannot precisely define an outcome. Ask how the surgeon balances your goals against tissue strain and future change.

Recovery and future decisions

Pain, swelling and temporary changes in sensation are common after surgery. Lifting, driving, exercise and work restrictions vary. Pregnancy, weight change and ageing can alter results. Implants may require monitoring and future surgery even when there is no immediate problem.

Risks

Risks include bleeding, infection, scars, asymmetry, altered nipple sensation, implant position change, rupture and capsular contracture. Breast implant-associated cancers are uncommon but important; ask the surgeon for current, product-specific information and symptoms that require review.

  • Is the surgeon on the GMC specialist register for an appropriate specialty?
  • Which implant is proposed and what safety information accompanies it?
  • What is included if revision or removal becomes necessary?
  • How may surgery affect screening or breastfeeding?
  • What implant record and follow-up information will I receive?
Plan beyond the first operation. Understand future monitoring, likely lifetime costs and the possibility of removal or replacement.
