How treatment works
Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine that temporarily reduces selected muscle activity. In cosmetic practice it is commonly discussed for expression lines around the forehead, frown area and eyes. Static lines, skin texture and volume loss may respond differently, so treatment should follow a face-to-face assessment by an appropriate prescriber.
Results and maintenance
Changes generally develop over several days and vary by person, dose and area. The aim and degree of movement reduction should be agreed beforehand. Results fade with time; repeat treatment should never be assumed to be automatically suitable.
Possible side effects
Temporary tenderness, bruising, headache or asymmetry can occur. Depending on the area treated, unwanted weakness may cause eyebrow or eyelid droop and other functional effects. Allergic reactions and more widespread effects are uncommon but require medical attention.
Consultation questions
- Is the proposed use licensed, and if not, what does off-label use mean?
- Which product and dose are proposed?
- What result is realistic while retaining natural expression?
- What review is included, and when should it occur?
- Who should I contact about an unexpected effect?
The phrase “Botox” is often used generally, but Botox is a brand name. A provider should tell you exactly which regulated medicine they intend to use.
